WHAT SAN DIEGO SENIORS SHOULD WEAR FOR FALL PORTRAITS IN 2026

Wardrobe stress should never be a part of your San Diego senior photo experience.

Fall is the best season for senior portraits in San Diego. The light turns warm and golden, the color palette gets richer, and it’s early enough that all school photo deadlines are met.

Here’s what I advise my seniors when it comes to styling their senior portraits: plan on 3 outfits, each with a different purpose and feel:

.

.

OUTFIT ONE: SOMETHING FUN AND CASUAL

Start with what feels most like you on a “I want to look cute today” day. Jeans and a cute top, a favorite sweater, whatever you’d actually wear hanging out with friends for a casual night out. This is where your personality shows up the most, and it usually photographs the most relaxed too.

Below, Ainara chose crisp white shorts with an elevated top as her “me on a cute day” outfit during her Windansea beach senior photo session.

OUTFIT TWO: A PRETTY DRESS WITH SHAPE

Next, a dress with a cinched waist or defined shape. This creates a flattering silhouette and photographs beautifully in flowing, romantic shots, especially against golden hour light. These make the classiest portraits you’re super proud to send out in all your announcements.

Anna did just this for her Coronado Beach senior photo session below, choosing a romantic floral patterned dress she picked up at Abercrombie & Fitch.

OUTFIT THREE: A STATEMENT PIECE FOR DRAMA

This is the one to have fun with. I’ve had seniors bring the prom dress they loved and never wanted to take off, an edgy leather biker jacket, or a piece with real movement or color. Something with drama gives us a few standout portraits that feel different from the rest of your gallery.

Arminé did this expertly when she donned her prom dress at the end of her sunset San Diego senior session (she also chose a beautiful meadow for her portraits, as you can see). I love how she paired it with her Converse!

ALWAYS BRING YOUR CAP AND GOWN

No matter what else you choose, bring your cap and gown. These are the portraits your family will want printed and framed for years, not just tucked into a graduation announcement.

CHANGING PRIVATELY, NO BEACH TOWEL GYMNASTICS NEEDED.

For outfit changes, I bring a private changing tent to every session. No searching for a bathroom or changing awkwardly in your car. You can switch looks quickly and comfortably wherever we’re shooting.

WHAT THE FULL EXPERIENCE WITH ME LOOKS LIKE

Your senior session with me isn’t just an hour with a camera, ending with a pile of digitals that will never make it off your hard drive.

Instead, I provide a beautiful, premium experience befitting this incredible milestone:

  • We start with a “get-to-know-you” discovery call, where I hear all about your needs, concerns, and desires for your portraits, plus answer all your questions.
  • I then come to you for your in-home consultation, where I handle the stress of picking what to wear, leaving you to just anticipate the fun you’re going to have. During this time we’ll also choose a location that will fit you perfectly.
  • Professional hair & makeup before your session adds to the fun, and ensures you’ll look and feel your best for your portraits.
  • Your session is fun and fast – we just run around and goof off together while listening to your favorite playlist. No stiff posing allowed! This is perfect for teens who can feel a little awkward and uncertain in front of the camera.
  • Your finished images come not just as digital files hidden on your hard drive. Instead, I design and create custom printed artwork as a tangible reminder of this moment, to be enjoyed for decades.

I’ve photographed San Diego seniors across La Jolla, Torrey Pines, Coronado, and our beautiful mountain foothills. Fall 2026 is already booking, so don’t wait to contact me – I’d love to hear more about you and what you’re envisioning for this milestone moment.

Just call me at (619)277-1187, or fill out my inquiry form here.

Warmly,

Michelle
