Senior year goes fast. And somewhere between the first week of school, college application deadlines, and everything else on your plate, it’s easy to push senior portraits to the back of the list.

Here’s the thing, though: late summer/early fall is genuinely the best time to do them. The light is softer, the locations are less crowded, and the timing lines up perfectly with college application season. If senior portraits are on your radar, now is the moment to make them happen.

I’ve been photographing San Diego seniors since 2019, and every year I see the same thing: the families who plan ahead get the best date choices and the most relaxed sessions. The ones who wait are scrambling in December, rushing through a session that deserved so much more.

The Light in San Diego This Time of Year Is Something Special

San Diego is beautiful year-round, but fall brings a particular quality of light that photographers love. The sun sits lower in the sky, which means golden hour lasts longer, as does that warm, flattering light that will photograph your senior so beautifully.

Whether we’re shooting at Windansea Beach in La Jolla, the bluffs at Torrey Pines, the wide sands of Coronado, or somewhere a little less expected (like Arminé’s foothill field location shown here), fall light makes San Diego’s most iconic spots look like they were made for portraits.

College Application Deadlines Are Real

Most early decision and early action deadlines fall in October and November. Many schools want a current, polished headshot. And even the ones that don’t, your senior is going to want great photos for their profiles, announcements, and thank you cards.

Booking a San Diego senior portrait session in August or September means your images are ready when you need them, lessening the stress you and your senior will feel during this already busy season.

What Makes a Senior Session True to Who Your Senior Really Is

The senior portraits that end up framed on the wall, the ones parents treasure, aren’t the ones where a teenager stood perfectly still and smiled on command. They’re the ones that captured their real personality shining through.

Like what you see reflected in my senior portfolio (here), my approach is warm, candid, and relaxed. Honestly, one of my favorite things to hear during a senior’s initial discovery call is that a senior is shy and/or feels awkward in front of the camera. And then I get the fun of reassuring them that we’re not going to go through a list of stiff poses, but just have fun.

And we do! I have lots of prompts I use during a session, some quite silly, that helps a senior relax. Soon the nerves melt away and the genuine smiles, laughs, and expressions come out.

A Few Things to Think About When Choosing a Senior Photographer

Style: Do their images feel alive and real, or do they look like everyone else’s senior photos? Do they make you feel something when you look at them?

Experience with teens of all personalities: A great experience and beautiful portraits requires lots of experience photographing seniors of all personalities. You need someone who can put a stiff 17-year-old at ease, who can match an outgoing teen’s energy level, and who can help a shy teen come out of her shell and have fun.

Do they provide a top-notch, premium experience? This incredible milestone calls for an incredible level of service. This is what I provide, including:

• An initial discovery call to learn about you and your teen’s unique needs, desires, and concerns
• An in-home styling consultation to help choose outfits that will photograph beautifully and flatteringly. This is also the time your senior and I chat and get to know each other, making the session itself a bit more like meeting a friend, not a stranger with a camera.
• In-home professional hair & makeup before the session. That one speaks for itself!
• Post-session custom artwork design and printing (like albums and framed wall portraits), ensuring this chapter endures in a way a folder of digital files simply can’t provide.
