3 Location Ideas for Maternity Photos in San Diego

So you’re expecting a baby – congratulations!

First of all, I’m so glad you’re having professional maternity photos taken – I tell you why here.

But you’re here to talk about locations, so without further ado, here are 3 location ideas for a maternity photo session in San Diego:

Maternity Session Location #1: Mission Trails Regional Park

I’ve got a full post with details on using Mission Trails for your photo session location here, but here’s a quick summary on why it’s a great choice:

  • It’s relatively easy to get to from the rest of San Diego – no long drives
  • Parking is free and easy
  • Mission Trails has diverse scenery for variety during your session, from wide open fields to old fashioned wooden fences to tall trees and sage brush
  • If your doctor has recommended limited physical activity for you, there are beautiful spots you can get to with minimal walking – basically just a few yards from your car!
  • Because Mission Trails is so big, it’s rarely crowded – no jockeying for a spot like a few other popular San Diego maternity photo locations (Iron Mountain, I’m looking in your direction).

Who is Mission Trails best for?

Mission Trails is a great choice for your maternity session if you’re looking for a beautiful, wide-open setting with rustic fields and diverse scenery.

Maternity Session Location #2: Our San Diego Beaches

Our San Diego beaches are a timeless choice for your maternity photos. I’ve photographed maternity sessions on many of them, and have written a full post on using Coronado Beach in particular here.

If you are considering using the beach for your maternity photos, I can help you choose the right one, taking into consideration parking, tides, and diverse scenery (yes, diverse scenery on the beach!).

The beach may be the right choice for your maternity session if:

  • you’d love a classic and timeless seaside look, sand and bare feet included.
  • you’d like a variety of settings to choose from, like greenery-covered dunes or dramatic cliff faces.
  • you love the idea of frolicking in the surf with your family, or for an extra dose of drama, even getting in the water and getting wet.

A Little Something Different: A San Diego In-home Maternity Photo Session

That’s right! You can do something unique and a little more intimate by have your maternity photos taken in the comfort of your own home!

Here’s why an at-home maternity session might be a great choice for you:

  • Saves the time and trouble of researching an outdoor location
  • Saves the time and trouble of getting the family all dressed and out the door in time
  • Since we don’t have to take traffic into consideration, there’s a lot more flexibility in choosing a day
  • Sessions would take place mid-morning for the best indoor light, so you don’t have to worry about your session time overlapping with any kiddos’ dinner times or bedtimes
  • You have the freedom to make the session a lot more intimate – an in-home maternity session gives you permission to wear whatever you like, and create whatever mood you like (including sexy!)

And don’t feel like you have to have a magazine-worthy home – I’ve worked in lots of homes, and will pick a space that will work beautifully, with minimum preparation time.
