When Is the Best Time to Take Maternity Photos?

.

First of all, I’m so glad you’re planning to capture this gestational miracle with professional photographs!

I tell you why you’ll be glad you did it in my post here.

But when is the best time to have pregnancy photos taken?

The answer is, generally, between 28 and 34 weeks (see the next section for exceptions to this rule). This window of time is when most women are far along enough for a nice big round belly, yet not so far along that any discomfort or difficulty moving may have set in.

However, as a San Diego lifestyle maternity photographer, I’ve photographed women as early as 24 weeks, and as late as 39 weeks (she had the baby the next day!). So there’s flexibility in there.

Your best bet is to start looking for a photographer (*clears throat*) after your 12 week appointment, and book your session for sometime in that 28-34 week window.

BUT, there are a few exceptions to this rule, which you’ll see below.

When is the best time to have maternity photos taken if it’s not my first baby?

Women who are pregnant for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. time usually start showing earlier, so you could schedule your maternity session earlier, too. It all depends on your unique pregnancy, of course, but you could aim for maternity photos during the 26-32 week time frame.

When is the best time to have maternity photos taken if I’m expecting twins or multiples?

If you’re expecting more than one baby, here’s a nice general rule: the more babies in there, the earlier you can schedule your maternity photo session.

Due to the fact that you will be showing earlier, and may deliver earlier (not to mention possible discomfort later in your pregnancy!), you could schedule your maternity photos for between 24 – 28 weeks.
