When it comes to your San Diego maternity photos, the where can shape the entire feeling of your session. San Diego is full of beautiful options, from sunset cliffs and windswept mountain meadows to rock-strewn beaches. But finding the right location for you, one that helps tell your unique story, takes more than just picking a pretty backdrop.
Here are three things I always recommend to help you choose the perfect location for your San Diego maternity photos:
.
Before scrolling Pinterest or Instagram, pause. When you imagine these photos on your walls or in an album, what do you feel? Is it barefoot on a beach during golden hour? Or is it holding hands as you traverse a mountain meadow?
Trust your instincts here, and don’t overthink it—what is your gut telling you?

San Diego may have pretty great weather year-round, but light, foliage, and beach crowds definitely shift with the seasons. That verdant grassy look only happens from mid-spring through mid-summer. Wildflower season varies in San Diego, but generally runs from about March to May. Beaches can be busy in summer, while beautiful fall foliage makes an appearance starting around November.
.
.
What do you love to do together? Where was your first date? Where’s your favorite place to vacation together? If there’s a theme emerging, let that point you in the right direction.
Couples whose idea of a dream vacation is backpacking through the Yukon may not find that the beach helps tell their story; a couple who met at a Mission Beach bonfire and return every year to that same spot, will likely feel the opposite.
.
.
Share with your photographer what you’ve discovered as you’ve thought over points 1-3 above; an experienced photographer will be able to guide you to a spot or two that will be a perfect match.
For instance, here is one location guide I share with all my maternity clients. Using the guide and the answers from points 1-3, together we pick a location that perfectly represents them and helps tell their story.

I’m a perfect fit for the couple who values photographs as meaningful as they are beautiful. If that sounds like you, see my maternity portfolio here, and contact me here.
