If you’ve ever tried to secure a school photographer at the “right” time, you already know how quickly calendars fill.

The question most directors ask is when to schedule photo day. But the more important question is when to book it. Because in San Diego, especially among private and Montessori preschools, the best dates are often spoken for long before the school year begins.

.

The Short Answer

For most San Diego preschools, the ideal time to book your school photos is:

January through April for the upcoming fall
August through October for spring sessions

Booking within these windows gives you the most flexibility, the best dates, and a smoother experience overall.

.

Why Booking Early Matters (Especially in San Diego)

San Diego has a high concentration of private schools, and many of them prefer similar photo timing. Early fall dates in particular are in high demand.

What tends to happen is this:

Directors who book early get their first choice of dates.
Directors who wait are left working around what’s still available.

That can mean settling for less-than-ideal timing or trying to fit photo day into an already busy stretch of the school calendar.

When you book early, you’re not just reserving a photographer, you’re giving yourself options.

.

Booking for Fall Photo Day

If your goal is a September through November photo day, the best time to book is late winter through early spring (January–April).

This allows you to:

  • Secure your preferred dates before they’re gone
  • Fit photo day smoothly into your school calendar
  • Communicate with parents well in advance

For many preschools, this timing also means your families receive their galleries early enough to plan for holiday gifts without feeling rushed.

.

Booking for Spring Photo Day

If your school prefers a March through May session, aim to book in late summer to early fall (August–October).

Spring sessions are often chosen by schools that want:

  • More settled, comfortable children
  • Milder weather for outdoor photos
  • A less crowded fall schedule

Even though spring tends to be slightly less competitive than fall, the most experienced photographers still book these dates well in advance.

.

What Happens When You Wait Too Long

Waiting until just a few months before your desired photo date can create unnecessary issues.

You may find that:

  • Your preferred photographer is already fully booked
  • Only less convenient dates remain
  • You’re squeezing photo day into your schedule, instead of planning around it

It often turns what should be a simple, well-organized experience into something that feels rushed.

.

The Best Approach for San Diego Preschools

For many of the private schools I work with, the goal isn’t just to have photos taken; it’s to offer families something that reflects the level of care they experience every day at your school – and booking early helps that happen.

It allows time for clear communication with parents, a well-planned photo day that doesn’t disrupt your classrooms, and a smooth overall experience.
