3 Reasons a Maternity Photoshoot Makes the Perfect Gift

What do you gift a woman that’s been growing a human? YOUR (shared) human?

How about a gift she’ll never even think about returning? A gift she never thought about adding to the registry? A gift she’ll find joy in, for decades to come?

A gift that new human you’ve created together will look at, and be reminded of how much they are loved and valued?

What kind of gift could possibly be this meaningful?

This is exactly what Justin gifted his wife Emily for her birthday a few weeks back. I was so touched when he proposed this to me, and together we designed a beautiful birthday card announcing the surprise.

As Justin himself admitted – “this one is going to be hard to top!”

If you’re searching for a meaningful, lasting gift for a mom-to-be, a maternity photoshoot might be exactly what she didn’t know she needed.

Here are 3 Reasons a Maternity Photoshoot Makes the Perfect Gift

1. It helps her hold on to this fleeting stage, forever.

Pregnancy is temporary. And while it may not always feel magical in the moment, it’s a season that many women treasure (especially that first time). A maternity session celebrates her changing body and the life she’s creating.

Even if she doesn’t feel her best right now, she’ll look back and be so glad it was documented—especially when that tiny baby is suddenly all grown up.

2. It’s a gift that’s just for her

So much of pregnancy is about preparing for the baby. A maternity shoot is one of the few things that’s truly about her—her body, her feelings, her connection with the baby, and with you.

This gift tells her: You matter, you’re seen, and you’re beautiful.

3. It’s a gift that will grow in value over time

Unlike flowers or onesies, these images don’t fade or get outgrown. Instead, they become heirlooms.

Years from now, she’ll be able to look at those images and remember the hope, love, and anticipation of waiting for her baby. And someday, that child will see them too—and know how loved they were from the very beginning.

A Few Tips from Your San Diego Maternity Photographer

1. You don’t need to know all the details.
I guide every client through the whole process—from choosing a location to helping with outfits. I even designed a custom birthday card for this particular session, so he didn’t have to scramble for a way to present it. If you have the intention, I can help you with the rest.

2. You don’t have to feel totally comfortable in front of the camera.
Almost no one does. Especially not during pregnancy. You don’t have to be a model or feel amazing in your body. You just have to show up. I’ll take care of the rest.

3. Bring your partner, even if he’s unsure.
I’ve photographed a lot of dads and partners who were a little reserved at first. Most warm up fast, especially once they realize it’s not about stiff poses or pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s about being together and letting that closeness show.

4. If you’re not sure what to wear, I’ll help with that too.
You don’t need to go out and buy something fancy. I’ll help you choose pieces that photograph well and feel like you. Simple is always best.

Frequently Asked Questions About Maternity Photos in San Diego

When’s the best time to take maternity photos?
Between 28 and 34 weeks is ideal for most people. You’ll have a nice round bump, but you (hopefully) won’t be too uncomfortable yet. If you’re carrying twins, or this isn’t your first baby, we may want to schedule earlier.

What should I wear for my maternity photos?
Something simple that makes you feel good. Flowy dresses work well, but you don’t need to buy anything fancy. I’ll help you choose pieces that photograph well and make you feel beautiful.

Can my partner or kids be in my maternity photos, too?
Yes. Always. These aren’t just photos of your belly—they’re about your relationships, your family, and this chapter of your life. Let’s include the most important people in your life.

I’m awkward in photos. Is that going to be a problem?
Not at all. Most of the people I photograph say this—and then they leave feeling surprised at how natural it felt. I’ll give you just enough guidance so you never feel lost, but I won’t over-pose you. You’ll still feel like yourself.

How far in advance should I book my maternity photoshoot?
As early as you can. I take on a limited number of sessions each month to make sure I can give each one the time it deserves. If you’re thinking about it, reach out.

One Last Thought…

If someone you love is pregnant—your wife, your partner, your daughter—this is one of the kindest gifts you can give.

And if you’re the one carrying this baby, you don’t need a “reason” to want photos of this time. You are the reason.

You won’t remember every detail of this season, and that’s your “why.” The anticipation, joy, and excitement you both feel deserves to be preserved.

If this is something you’ve been thinking about, I’d love to help you make it happen.
