What to Do When Your Husband Hates Having His Picture Taken

Not every half of a couple enjoys having professional pictures done, and some hate it to the point of strife and argument.

As an experienced San Diego family photographer, I can tell you this is not a rare issue at all! So, first of all, know you’re not alone!

.

But documenting your family in a meaningful and lasting way is vitally important to you, so how do you get him on board?

My long time client Victoria is an expert on this, since her husband absolutely loathes having pictures taken. Somehow, she got him to show up for pictures with me 4 years in a row!

So I reached out to her and asked if she had any suggestions for other women in this boat, and she gave 4 pieces of advice:

1). “Find a photographer who makes it fun and can make your husband laugh.”

I hate to toot my own horn here, but I’m a pretty fun photographer. Plus, I do lifestyle photography, meaning there’s a lot of movement and games and aggressive avoidance of stiff posing.

Apparently I made her husband laugh, and made the session fun and fast, so he was willing to return year after year.

2). “Let him have a beer (or three) before the session.”

That one just stands on its own.

3). “DO NOT schedule pictures during the game.”

Tread carefully during Sundays in the fall, ladies!

4). “Let him dress comfortably.”

As long as he roughly coordinates with you and the rest of the family, and looks reasonably put together, let him be comfortable.

5). This advice is from me, Michelle, not my client – if he really doesn’t want to, don’t force him.

When it comes right down to it, intimacy and harmony in your marriage are more important than getting pictures taken.

As a San Diego family photographer, I can tell you, men who are being dragged to pictures do not create beautiful art!

Instead, indulge yourself. Take the kids for a fun “mommy and me” session, get some beautiful pictures, and gift them to him for Father’s Day or his next birthday.

That way, you’ll all get something enjoyable out of the experience, with nobody forced into anything against their will.

Hope that helps!
