Here’s My Top Recommendation for a Unique & Fun Family Activity in San Diego! ⛵️

A family of 6 sits on a Coronado Island sand dune during a beach family photoshoot, smiling and looking at each other.

.

As a long-time San Diegan, a mom, and an experienced family photographer round these parts, I’ve had my fair share of all the great stuff there is to do around here.

There are the big, obvious things: the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, the beach, Legoland.

But maybe you’re looking for something fresh and new, something that kids and parents will enjoy. Or, maybe you’re visiting San Diego and want to really experience the true essence of “American’s Finest City.”

Bonus: it’s also the perfect activity for when it’s hot out, because you’ll get that fabulous bay breeze! ☀️

Have $9/person (3 and under are free!) and a couple of hours? Here’s my #1 suggestion for a below-the-radar fun family activity in San Diego:

Take the Coronado ferry! For $9 each way, the ferry, with a fleet in operation since 1915, will take you from the downtown harbor and across the bay to the Coronado Ferry Landing, on beautiful Coronado Island.

While on the ferry, you’ll get a fantastic view of the massive bay, the Coronado Bay Bridge, the downtown skyline, the massive military ships and aircraft carriers in port, our waterfront with its birds and harbors, and even Mexico off to the south.

At the landing, enjoy a meal at the waterfront market place, or rent bikes or a surrey and cruise the Bayshore Bikeway, taking in the bay view and the San Diego skyline.

If after your ferry trip back across the bay, you’re not done with the San Diego waterfront, stroll up and down the harbor walk. You’ll pass the massive bulk of the USS Midway Museum, the San Diego Maritime Museum with its historic wooden sailing ship The Star of India, and just generally get a pleasant (and sea salt-tinged) taste of this beautiful and bustling harbor.

Looking for a unique date night? Get a babysitter and take a sunset bay cruise on that same ferry!

Finally, cap the day or evening off with some local & handcrafted ice cream at one of San Diego’s favorite ice cream shops, MooTime! It’s conveniently located on the main drag in Coronado, Orange Avenue.

Have fun!
